
Matthew Tomkinson

Matthew Tomkinson (b. 1989) is a writer, composer, and researcher based in Vancouver. He received his PhD in Theatre Studies at the University of British Columbia, where he studied sound within the Deaf, Disability, and Mad arts. Matthew’s artistic practice spans a wide range of disciplines, including text, performance, installation, sound design, and new media. His work shows an overarching interest in constraint-based compositional approaches.

Matthew’s debut album, The Woe Trumpets, was released in January of 2022, along with a screening of the accompanying film. His lipogrammatic poetry collection, oems, it out with Guernica Editions as of November 1st, 2022. An experimental audio essay called “Notes on Mad Listening” is forthcoming in January of 2023, from Capacious: Journal for Emerging Affect Inquiry.
